Fade to White

Fade to White

Hello and welcome back!

This one will be “all natural”. I’m still experimenting with the urban stuff, but let’s just say some of my urban experiments didn’t turn out as planned. That’s how it goes sometimes, it’s all part of the learning experience. I did end up with a couple I like, but I’ll save them for a future blog.

Autumn was long and fruitful, probably the most colourful I’ve ever experience here. We didn’t get our first frost until November, even my potted plants on my porch were blooming on Halloween, which is kind of unprecedented up here.

Over a couple of glorious days at Birds Hill park I managed to snap these:

The next one may hurt your eyes. It’s purposely out of focus, a little abstract experiment to concentrate on the broad shapes and colour, but it’s probably not for everyone:

This is my favourite from this group, it sometimes pays to step closer and isolate the subject:

And even closer still, I came across this frost-rimmed mushroom on the forest floor:

On a different day, again on the forest floor, the sunlight found its way to the fading ferns:

Elsewhere on the forest floor, a grim reminder of life’s challenges:

Stepping back to a larger scene, a polarizer is critical to prevent the sky from washing out and removing the glare from the leaves:

After experiencing peak fall in the city, some friends and I did our annual camping trip. Unlike 3 years ago, where we had to wade through hip deep snow, this year was a “walk in the park”, with foggy mornings, and sunny days:

After that, winter finally blew in, freezing the river and dumping enough snow to cover everything. The “dinner plates” of ice that form in the eddies of the river when the temperature is just right are pretty interesting:

Finally, our first “seasonal” morning in a long while, -18C at sunrise:

I have to admit I like the minimal human element here.

And that is the December blog, hope you enjoyed. Cheers, and stay warm!
