Marking the end of 2018
It’s been a busy month work-wise. When the sun rises after work starts, and sets before it ends, the only chance to get out into the field have been the weekends, and those have been busy too. So this blog will be short, and if I’m honest, not particularly notable.
The snow arrived. It hasn’t been very cold, but the skies have been consistently bleak. Sometimes that has its own appeal. I Iike the layers of subtle colours and shades on these:
Sometimes the sun threatens to poke through:
…and almost makes it:
The occasional gleam lights up and enhances textures:
…and finally broke through enough for a decent sunset:
Since then it’s been snowing for several days, light fluffy cotton flakes that pile up everywhere. I thought the lines of this tree and the piled snow were striking, the problem is separating it from the cluttered background. At f8 there was just enough depth of field to capture the main limbs, but the focus doesn’t fade quickly enough:
Finally, while out in our local Assiniboine Forest, I noticed on several of the side trails someone had intermittently placed some Christmas ornaments. A few were colourful, a but jarring in the snowscape, but this subtle silver ornament was my favourite:
I had originally shot it with B&W in mind, which I used in the caption image above, but now I’m not sure which one I prefer.
Well, that brings this year to a close. I’m hoping my work/life balance improves in the next few months and I can get out more, but we have to “make hay while the sun shines" as my grandpa used to say. We haven’t had a real deep freeze yet, so I’m looking forward to 2019 and what may come.
Best wishes to all!
